How to choose a ladies motorbike helmet

Buying a helmet online comes down to three things you can check before you order: the size, the shape and the safety rating. Get those right and the rest is down to what you want it to look like.

Getting the fit right

Run a tape measure around your head about an inch above your eyebrows and take the reading at the widest point. That number in centimetres gives you your size, and most women end up somewhere between XS and M. Sizing does vary between brands, so always check the individual product page rather than assuming your size carries across.

Shape matters as much as circumference. Two riders with identical head measurements can find the same helmet fits one perfectly and pinches the other, because shells are built to round, intermediate or long oval profiles. A helmet that fits properly grips your cheeks firmly, moves your scalp when you turn it, and does not shift when you shake your head. If it slides, it is too big.

If you are anywhere near Nottingham, come to the Daybrook shop and try a few on. It is the quickest way to work out which brand suits your head shape, and once you know that, buying online gets a lot easier.

Safety standards and SHARP ratings

Every new helmet sold in the UK has to meet ECE 22.06, the current European safety standard, so anything on this page is legal to ride in. Beyond the legal minimum, the government’s SHARP scheme crash-tests helmets independently and scores them from one to five stars. You can filter this page by SHARP rating if you want to see the highest scoring lids first.

Planning to do track days or race? You will need an ACU Gold approved helmet, which is a separate approval on top of ECE. We have a dedicated ACU Gold section if that applies to you.

Which type of helmet suits your riding?

Full face helmets give you the most coverage and the least wind noise, which is why most riders doing motorway miles end up in one. Flip front lids do the same job but let you lift the chin bar at the petrol station without taking the whole thing off, handy if you wear glasses. Open face helmets are lighter and cooler for town riding and scooter commuting, though you are trading away chin protection to get that. Crossover and dual sport helmets sit between road and off-road, with a peak and a wider field of view.
Most helmets here take a Bluetooth intercom if you ride with a pillion or in a group. Check the individual product page for compatibility before you order.

Ladies motorbike helmet FAQs

Are ladies motorbike helmets different from men’s?

Not structurally. Helmets are not certified by gender and the safety standard is identical. The helmets on this page are grouped together because they come in smaller shell sizes, lighter builds or colourways that female riders tend to prefer. If a men’s helmet fits your head better, wear it.

What size ladies motorbike helmet do I need?

Measure round your head an inch above the eyebrows at the widest point, then match the centimetre reading to the size chart on the product page. Sizes are not consistent across brands, so check each one rather than ordering by the size you had last time.

What is the safest ladies motorcycle helmet?

Look for a five star SHARP rating alongside the mandatory ECE 22.06 approval, and prioritise a helmet that fits properly. A five star lid that is a size too big will protect you less well than a four star one that fits.

Can I fit a Bluetooth intercom to a women’s helmet?

Most modern helmets have recesses for speakers and a mounting point for the unit. Compatibility varies by model, so check the product page or give us a ring on 0115 646 1324 and we will tell you what fits.

Do you deliver ladies motorbike helmets free?

Yes, delivery is free to mainland UK addresses. Full details are on our delivery and returns page.
